Engine is a 289 4bl after it warms up it smokes black smoke when i get on it. Then also warm it won't stay running. Plugs looked fouled out(really dark) putting in new plugs what should the gap be? I am thinking I might need a valve job or a complete head job. Would timing make it smoke? Car starts up with absolutely no issues cold? If the engine is hot it won't hardly start. Also will die when I stop running when I stop the car after it warms up.

Your a/f mix is waaay rich. The most simple explanation is that your choke plate is stuck closed. It could be that the linkage is bound up, or that the adjustment is off. It could also be a problem with the choke itself; is it electric or thermal? Is it getting power/heat?

On the upside, you don't need to worry about your heads

Yeah it is awesome I dont think it is the heads either now. I have a 600 CFM holly performance carm with an eletric choke. Just never ever could get a choke right on my cars. Gong to have a good buddy help me check timing and get this carb right. Is 600 CFM to big for my stock 289.

600 should be just fine depending on your modifications. Stock or near stock that will be just fine.

It's big. It will work, but a 500 would give you better low-rpm throttle response. I have a 600CFM carb on my 350hp 331 that spins to 6k rpm.

Black smoke=too much fuel. Carb needs some tuning or like mentioned the choke is not operating. Holley's can be tempermental if you don't know what you are doing.
