1966 Ford Mustang, Radiator Fan wobble?
Hello, name is Ron, live in California, glad to be a part of this forum now, have an issue was wondering if you guys could help me out with.
1966 Ford Mustang V8, Automatic, 289, 152K miles, all original CA car, been garaged and covered for the past 20+ years, but i keep it on a Battery Tender and start it up and ride it around the block once a month, always starts up and runs fine.
Recently, when i ran it around the neighborhood it started making noise from the belts, squeeking sounds, but after opening up the hood, i noticed that the Radiator Fan moves around just a bit, a neighbor came over to check it out and (when the car was off) was able to move the whole fan assembly up and down, told me the Water pump is bad.
Is this so?
there are no leaks, but the whole fan assembly does move up and down like 1/2 an inch or so, he told me its the bearing inside the water pump, and that i should not drive the car till i get it replaced/fixed.
Where do i get a water pump for a 66 mustang? im told the 66 is different then the 65's?
Is this something that i can replace myself? im pretty mechanical, but not that good, $ is SUPER tight.
Is my pump cast iron or aluminum?
thanks.
The Car.
We are thinking about selling it, but either way, this needs to be fixed soon, so that i can keep riding the car once a month to keep everything working like i have.
any info or tips will be greatly appreciated.

I think the neighbors diagnosis may be spot on provided you do not have a clutch fan installed. Those can show the same symptoms.
Post a pic of the fan if you do not know if its a clutch fan. (A clutch fan can spin by hand when the car is off).
But, if it is the water pump shaft that is bad then you can get a replacement at any auto parts store, it should be a cast iron pump and a fairly inexpensive change thats fairly straight forward.

Coupe is correct.
If it has a clutch, in between the fan and the pump it will have a unit that is about 4inches diameter and finned thay allowes the fan to spin freely ehen the engine is off and cold. If you cannont spin it under these circumstances then most likely its not a clutch mounted fan.
Auto zone will have your parts. They are very common.

Thanks guys, i will check it out this weekend, and see if it has a clutch on it or not, ill snap a pic.
do you guys think the car will be more valuable in 3 years, since it will be 50 years old and an antique?
its been garaged at my mother in laws for like 20 years now, but she wants it out, so we have to figure out if we are gonna keep it, or sell it.
its an all original cali car, i was told it even has cali only smog stuff on it, lol

Got some progress done this weekend.
removed radiator
got all the stuff removed, was hard, especailly all those brackets that were in the way.
cleaned the surface really well
all the old parts looked really bad
so i just came back from orielly with all new parts, cost was just about $300!!!
I think i have a probelm tho, the old pump had an extra hole there, where i think the A.I.R, pump bracket mounted, this new pump does not have that one extra mounting hole, what do i do??

The water pump you got was more than likely a remanufactured unit that originally came off of God knows what model / year.
If you are indeed missing a necessary bolt hole then the path of least resistance would be to start where you bought the replacement and explain to them what you have going on. They probably only have a couple of them in stock so you may be out of luck with this but take your old unit with you and ask if you can see the other pumps they have in stock and compare them. Maybe hit up the other parts houses in town too.
Failing that, NPD or CJ's would be able to hook you up with the correct piece I'm sure.
