5.0 Merc

So I have a 89 5.0 in my car and I already have bbk short tube headers and a "H" pipe exhaust hollowed out cats and flowmaster mufflers. but I wanna change this all up and get long tube header and a "X" pipe and I suppose keep the cats and mufflers I have. any ideas on what I should do an what would help put out the best performance?

I wouldn't switch to an X pipe, there is little if anything to be gained by doing so. It also won't sound as good either.

Whats been done to the engine that warrants long tube headers? A fairly warmed over small block will do just fine with shorty or mid length headers.

I opted for mid length. I have no interest in worrying about speed bumps and dealing with heat soaked starters.

Why do you need cats on a classic?

well I figured going with long tubes would help out a few horse power and maybe give a better sound. and I need to have cats because my car is my daily driver and would obviously be illegal without them. they are in fact hollowed out.

id pass on the flowmasters.. go with glasspacks or turbo muffler set up (borla or magnaflow). I like glass packs because they give the car a classic muscle car sound. id also stick with h-pipe. sounds more muscular not raspy

I was thinking going X pipe as well but decided to go with an H pipe instead. Lot easier to work on the car as well and sounds better like others have mentioned.

The Xpipes do sound good, they just need to be in front of a chambered muffler, IMO. I had an Xpipe and 2 chambered Magnaflow Mufflers on my H/C '95 GT and it sounded perfect!

Anyone else notice this is in the classics section and no the Fox section?

X pipes give you more rasp, while H gives you a deeper tone.

Lol.. I was about to say something about not needing Cats on a classic,, but if this is a Fox, I guess he still needs them. Sucks ..

His are gutted though so they have no emissions effect on the car. Just has them on the car still for when they go in for visual inspection if I had to guess.
