Default Wire on fuel tank/sending unit - 1966 289

Hey - I just replaced the gas tank and sending unit, I also have a newer fuel pump. Everything running well. Here is my question. . .is the wire that connects to the bottom of the fuel tank/sending unit just powering the fuel gauge or is it sending power to the sending unit in order to send gas to the pump/carb? I don't have the wire hooked up right now because I was under the impression it is just for the gauge. Then I started wondering. . .when I get low on gas, does the sending unit need power to send the fuel to the pump? I'm not sure this wire even has power right now, but it was connected to the old tank, but the gauge never worked. I think it was disconnected in order to install an after market tach, but that's a project for another day.

Thanks for taking time to read!

The wire only reads the resistance from the fuel sender and the guage reads it, it does not power anything.
