Default Where should idle be set?

How do you know when the idle is set correctly? I am adjusting the idle screw on my carb., but I am not sure how fast/slow I should set the idle. Any recommendations?

I appreciate any help.

I have this problem because my dad thinks the idle i set it at is too fast, and i think his idle is too slow. How can i hook up a tach just to set the idle?

Go to sears/autopartsstore and get a dwell/tachometer. You hook it right up to ground and the positive post on the coil. It should be around 750-900. 800rpm is a good number.

Hey that works for me. Most importantly, it sounds dummy proof!

I just tune mine by ear. I keep turning it down till the engine starts to throb, then turn the car off and make sure it starts again. But I also have a bigger cam, so that effects it a little.

Also, set it with the car in neutral and parking brake on (or with someones foot on the brake if it makes you feel better). Putting it in park raises the idle, so it will be artificially high, but when you put it into gear the idle can drop as much as 300rpm.
