BBF vs SBF autox
#11
Ok i have some questions regarding setups
ok so i want my 72 coupe to be a street rod/occasional autox/occasional drag
it is mostly going to be a street rod going from show to show freeway local driving etc
ok what i want is a motor that is going to last me a good amount of time and dependable and can take my abuse when i want to abuse it. I know much depends on how i take care of my motor but also it depends on the motor itself
ok so i plan on going with a mustang 2 suspension in the front and a 9 in LSD traction loc etc similar to whats in the new mustangs
First question whats better airbags or coilovers?
ok and also next i want to do a EFI system on my car with all the goodies. now the big issue is for my needs what is better a SBF or a BBF? i want to keep it at around 10:1 so i can run 91 when im cruising around. but for my needs what will be better? i know either way ill get ****ty MPG as long as i get around 10 on the street its fine
So question 2 BBF vs SBF?
ok and now my last question the tranny
since its gonna be a cruiser but also a track car which will be funner to drive?
manual vs auto?
Thank you!

Decide where the car is going to be primarily, if its autox then I would go with the small block and keep the car light as possible. In my experience smaller, lighter cars do better on those little courses usually outpacing more powerful cars that would otherwise blow them into the weeds. Same thing with the trans, manual for autox, auto for everything else.
As for power check out AFR, their cylinder heads can make serious power. I'm ordering a set for my 351 buildup.

How much money do you want to spend?
You can build a 427W stroker that makes 600-700hp that will run on 91, you just gotta be willing to spend the money.
You build a blower engine, a turbo 427 can do 1,000hp on pump fuel without much difficulty.
Honestly though, in an open track/autox situation, handling is vastly more important, and too much power can be difficult to control. Autox especially you'll NEVER use beyond a certain power just because the size of the track. Otherwise you're getting into race slicks and prepped cars...then you're racing against $200,000 race cars.
Just put a 347/363 in it with AFR195's and a custom cam and it'll do 5x more than you thought it could.
If you haven't ever had a serious performance car, then start with a built 302 so you don't wreck your car or kill yourself.

If you want a good all around driver; street, autox, strip go SBF stroker. A 347 from a 302 is a good motor. If you are more apt for slamming seat of your pants torque at the strip, build a 445 stroker out of a 390 block. For under $7k you can have 550hp 600tq under 6K rpm. I have never worked on 429/460 but from what I have heard you can get same if not better numbers even cheaper. Plus the 460 blocks are easy to find.
