Default DSS 306 vs 87-92 H.O. with AFR heads

Okay guys.. I'm not familiar with the DSS 306 engines at all. I currently own a 66 coupe without an engine. My plan was to do the famous setup of just having the 87-92 H.O. motor with AFR heads and drop it in. I got a call today about a DSS 306 full motor for 500 bucks. The guy told me I wouldn't be disappointed and what not. I've looked up the engines and they seem good, but I want to hit the same (if not better HP) than I would with the famous 5.0L set up for my classic daily driver. Thanks guys.

P.S. I don't really know the specs on the engine he is selling. Apparently he is selling a bunch of stuff because of a family related issue (cars, motors, etc.) and he sounded legit on the phone, but I really need to know if he is just wasting my time.

SO... DSS 306 vs 87-92 H.O. with AFR heads

If you can hear it run, go for it.

any one else have an opinion?.. I have to make a correction.. It's just the block.. However, this is what the guy said about it:

"It only has three pulls and it's just the short block. The motor has been at my shop on an engine stand. I oil a rotate it often. This motor will make a little more than 400 horses the way it's set up with the right heads."

Since you can't hear it run, I would at least inpect the bearings and cylinder walls.
What makes it a DSS? They seem to be made of good parts.

You gotta wonder why, if it was so good, it was abandoned. Only a physical inspection can tell the condition.
