Well, i think the engine totally assembled would be in the ball park on 1000 lbs. I dont really know about the transmission. I'd just get a 2 ton jack and a good solid stand.

id say no more than 500lbs for a 289. transmission maybe no more than 200-250

RE: How much does the engine weigh
A stock 289 2v weighs 485 lbs. A stock Boss 351 weighs 550, and the 4.6 in my Mach weighs 600. I can almost lift a C4 by myself, so it would be safe to say it weighs around 200 lbs or so. So, it would be safe to say that any engine hoist and stand with a rating of 2000 lbs. would be adequate.

The chebbies may be using more nickel in their blocks, therefore making them heavier. I know virtually nothing about chebbies though. I have owned a few GM cars and trucks, and everyone of them turned out to be crap. I currently have a chebbie Blazer here on the island, and it burns oil lilke a S.O.B. and it only has 80K miles on it. Is it any wonder that GM quit making the Camaro. They suck.
