Default '70 Mustang Emissions?

Been sprucing up the underside/brakes of my '70 fastback / Base 302/2bbl Dearborn car. This charcoal canister was mounted on the passenger side lower control arm. I've seen these on '71/2 cars but never a '70. It's connected to a hose, then tubing, then hose again and runs up the passenger inner fender, across the firewall to behind the booster then down under the car and along the frame rail all the way to the rear, where it is/was not connected. I assume it went to the gas tank? Anyone ever seen this on a '70?? Perhaps my car spent time in Cali and it had to be put on at that time?

Any info appreciated. It's not going back on but I was just curious.

Where was your car delivered to originally?
Unless it is a show car or rare, you might consider removing it?

It's not show/rare at all. Building it for my daughter's college graduation. I know it's not needed, am just curious about what it is and if it was original? No clue where the car was delivered to.

it was delivered to ca or similar smog state.

they started using them on 1970 vehicles.

the rubber hose goes to a clip on the passenger side fender apron/shock tower then continues to the top of the smog gas tank where there are around 4 vents coming out of a 3" diameter plug.

the cannister is filled with charcoal.

the other large tube on it gets a cap.

last i knew this clip was not reproduced and is worth some money to concours guys. if you have it i suggest you advertise it on the boss 302 or 428cj forums etc.

the can is worth something also.

the larger tube is for a corrugated paper tube that went to the air cleaner.

all 70 air cleaners had the hole for it but the non smog cars used a plug for it.

Thanks Much! I have a buddy that has 8 '70 mustangs (including a completely stock low mile original Boss 302 and a 428 SCJ Pace car) so I'm sure he could use it at some point. Again, appreciate the info!

I concur with Barnett, we used to inspect those cardboard tubes as part of the smog testing we did out here in calif. Most were somehow dinged up or torn and of course they were dealer only items.
