I currently have been running the wrong water pump in my 66 with the original 289.The one i have been using has the outlet on the passenger side. So i have had to use two lower radiator hoses and a coupling to get it to run to the drivers side to connect it up to the radiator.
I just had a new 331 built that i am picking up today. I am going to install it in the next few days. I need to get the correct water pump with the outlet on the drivers side. Also, the new engine has a late model 302 block which I am sure used a accessory set up with a serpentine belt. I am sticking with the V-belt set up for now.
Does anyone out there know if I need a special pump or not? Can I stick with a stock pump from a napa or orielly type store? I know that there are different rotation pumps based on the belt set up.

Get a water pump for a 1979 F-150 with a 351w. That will give you correct rotation and drivers side outlet. You must have a newer radiator, because a stock mustang radiators inlet/outlet were both on the passenger side.

i would buy an airtex or bosch pump.

if it has a 50 oz crank you need a special damper from summit racing to run all your early style pulleys.

Thanks guys, I have new be cool aluminum radiator and I have a newer 302 but it has a 331 rotating assembly with a 28oz imbalance.

Also, my block has ports for an external oil cooler. Do need to run it or, can I plug the ports?

If I switch to a serpentine set up, will the 79 for pump work? Or, will the rotation be wrong?
Also, my buddy has a 85 5.0 can I use his brackets for the a/c and pwr steering? I have a newer ac compressor.
I also have a borgenson steering box. Can I use his pump too?

If you stick with the v belts, a 302 pump has the hose on the drivers side. If you switch to the serp belt, you need to use the later pump. something from 91? or later. Then there is the fan clutch, which Ford changed in 94? so, you'll have to match that with the pump you choose. I don't see the brackets being an issue. The basic block hasn't changed over the years.

So the bolt pattern from the 79 f150 was diff. From my timing cover. So after a lot of research, I think I can use a 85 WP. It has the same bolt pattern, clockwise rotation, and a passenger side inlet.

if airtex pumps are as ****ty as their fuel pumps i wouldnt touch one with a 100 foot pole..
