Default Fuel issue??

Got the car running and it consistently running at around 185-190. If I shut it off and don't start it right up right away it doesn't like to start. It just cranks and cranks and will eventually fire up then runs fine. If I let it set until the temp gets under 160 it will fire right up. I think it's the gas sitting n the bowls of the carb evaporating that is causing this. I have a performer RPM intake and an edelbrock 600CFM carb. I think adding a spacer will fix it. Just have no Idea what one to get??? so many configurations.

okay try this

Right after shut down when warm remove the air cleaner

By hand move the throttle quickly to full throttle position and watch for the fuel shot from the accelerator pump

It should be two nice streams of fuel try this a few times it should work fine each time

Now start the car again let it run for a minute

Now let the car sit the required time needed to cause the hard start issue

Repete the accelerator pump test without restarting the engine.

Do you get at least 2 to 3 good accel pump shots from it?

The idea is if fuel were to evaporate from the bowls you would not get 3 good accel pump shots. If you got none this would make it quite hard to start.

Ok, if it doesn't then what?? would that indicate a problem in the fuel delivery system??

I was just assuming that when it was hot I needed to get the fuel a little further away from the heat.

are you using E85 corn gas?

are you running the exhaust cross over in the intake or did you block it off?

what is your timing at idle with the distributor vacuum hose disconnected?

it should be around 8-9 for a stock eng or 12 for a high perf one.

What decides weather I should have 9,10,11,12 on the timing

Yes it could...It would indicate that the fuel is getting away from the carb after being shut down...fuel should remain in the floats for sometime before it evaporates out...like days or weeks.

It could even be a weak accel pump piston

let us know what you find

Mines a daily driver (my only car that I own), I put about 7-8k miles on my car last year. I had to work through what you had for issues on my cars first year of ownership eight years ago.

Easy fixes...

-Wrap the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb with some kind of heat material also make sure that it's not resting on any radiator stuff.

-Put in a small plastic spacer between the carb and intake

-Make sure that you gas cap is vented, I think that was the last year they were made.

-My air cleaner was trapping air between the carb bowls from the intake, I changed my air cleaner to a less sexier cleaner.

-Stronger fuel pump ~120 or so GPH, also can install a psi gauge on your fuel line, it should read 6psi while running.

-I put on exhaust wrap a few years back....I wouldn't recommend using it. Four years later, it looks like crap and it sends more heat to my pipes under the car and leads us to the next issue...

-It doesn't sound like you have a starter issue, but you can always buy a wrap for it as well.

cylinder cranking pressure mainly. these are minimum numbers but very typical.
