Default New to mustangs

I recently bought a 68 coupe with a rebuilt 460 about 500hp c6 trans
problem is it was originally a 289 car with a 8 inch rear and drum brakes
The front springs were changed for the big block but that is as far as he got

any advise as to what 9 inch rearends fit and ratio i should run
also advice on brakes and power steering

you can pick up a used 9inch off craigslist from a full sized ford for around 300 drum to drum. The only thing is some modifications would need to made to it. Spring perches may need to be welded on, other brackets may need to be cut off and most likely the housing would need to be shortened and the axles cut / resplined. So there is some work involved with this for sure, but still less money than buying a fully build rearend from say curry for example. As for gearing, 3.00 to about 3.50 would be good since you have a 3 speed transmission. If your going to be doing some freeway driving i say keep it closer to 3.00. I know that gearing is pretty tall but that 460 has more than enough bottom end to move the car.

As for brakes, there are many options for power discs, you can get factory mustang/granada discs, or you can just buy a kit online. I think the conversion kits are only around 800 and are easy to install at home, they come with instructions. Honestly though, depending on what your going to use the car for, some large drum brakes that are in good shape will work fine, it just depends on what your uses for the car are.

Just do some digging online and you ll find an endless supply of resources for mustangs, from do it yourself articles to aftermarket / original parts. It helps to read up and research before just going out and spending money.

Sounds good. Post some pictures of the car if you can. Im always interested to see big blocks in early mustangs. Does yours still have the original shock towers?
