67 Coupe power steering slop
Hi all. I've started to try and diagnose where the slop is coming from in my power steering. Starting from the top, the steering box and pitman arm look good, but I noticed a fair amount of play in the ball stud that connects the pitman arm to the control valve. The stud to pitman arm connection is fine, it's the ball end that moves in the sleeve. I did some research and there is supposed to be some movement here, but does anyone know how much the ball is supposed to move?? There's a good 1/2" of movement in either direction and I can turn the wheel a good 45 degrees before the control valve starts to move.
I want to figure this out before I move to the rest. Thanks in advance.

It is countless of how many times folks has asked this question. Yes sir you are correct, the ball stud does indeed have to move to "move the Spool" to make fluid transfer.
Now the measure??? a 1/2" is a plenty--TooMuch?? More than likely.
How long as it been since the lower unit was rebuilt?? If 40 years, it is worn out. Same for Box.
Rebuild the system, have a excellent working, NO LEAK Power steering that drives perfect.
