Hey Gun Jam...you do not..repeat...DO NOT have to pull the distributor to change the intake gasket on a 289. I know because I recently changed my intake manifold without pulling the distributor. If it was a Chevy engine, yes, definitely you must...but one of the beauties of small-block Fords is that little-known detail. With the distributor in place, you just slip the intake in at an angle from behind. Very easy and saves you the additional hassle of resetting timing and worrying about getting the oil pump driveshaft properly engaged.

barnet468 - yes it is cast iron, it is 2 wheel disc, no power booster. I don't really know how many pistons (or how to tell) but looking at it and online I think it is 2 piston. (previous owner changed from drum to disc.)

Thanks for your help.

Oh, yeah...a couple more little hints on that intake that I forgot to mention...Gun Jam is right about all those little gasket scrapings. I used a vacuum cleaner with one of those little pointy attachments to suck up all the scrapings as I went. Worked really well. Also, even after draining the coolant, there will still be some in the intake, and when you pop it loose, it WILL run down into the lifter valley, and from there down into the oil pan. So...be SURE to change the oil after you do the intake work.

You are correct it would be possible to change the intake without pulling the dizzy but I use an installation method that is probably a bit different than what you may use.

I cut the heads off of 4" bolts and I run 4 of them into the cylinder heads 2 on each side so that they form a square shape. I then use gaskacinch and place the prepped and trimmed gasket down. The bolt shanks act as guides and I get the gasket perfect so there is no overlap into the intake or head ports.

I then run a fat bead of right stuff to act as end gaskets in place of the cork junk I then slide the intake down on the 4 bolt shanks and it guides it perfectly into place I dont have to worry about dislodging or sliding the gasket out of alignment nor do I have to worry about crashing the intake into that pile of goop because I'm trying to install it at an angle. It seals perfect every time (just remember to use the x over block offs if your intake does not have exhaust cross over or it burns the gasket to pieces....ask me how I know

I have found the 10 extra min required to remove/replace dizzy is worth it as the dizzy does not allow you to install the intake using the 4 bolts as guides. If the dizzy is left in place the intake must be installed at an angle and not straight down.

here it is guaranteed. see how easy that was, lol.

you can use 1990 ford granada, manual disc/drum master also but it might have a 1" piston which will make your brake pedal harder to depress.

raybestos mc36440 15/16 piston, lt side port, disc/drum. 63.00
