Tie rod boots - metal ring or not?
Hi
I need to replace a tie rod boot cover. When I went to order the part I noticed I have a choice between one with a metal ring at the bottom and one that doesn't. I think the ring was the way they were originally. Is there an advantage to not having the ring? Better seal? Or was the manufacturer just skimping?
Thanks much.

The stainless steel ring holding the tie rod boot onto the tie rod was specific to one manufacturer as opposed to the floating boot used by others. The floating boot will not allow too much grease to be pumped into the joint, while the ringed boot can actually be ruptured from overgreasing. I don't think the ringed style boot can be installed on the floating style tie rod; however, the floating style can be easily installed in place of the ringed boot.
