If you have the TOB that is a sleeve that expands and rides on the transmission shaft sleeve then they should have very little freeplay between the TOB face and the clutch fingers. I think mine is set at .040. Keep a stiff spring on the pedal, and don't leave your foot on the pedal at all. Also don't ride the clutch when shifting/going slow. Either all in or all out, keep the mid range stuff to a minimum if you can.

My TOB is the McLeod Bolt on.
I took the transmission out yesterday and there is no sign of damage to the TOB. I don't know what the crunching, crackling, squealing I heard was.
I have another T5 I may put the TOB on and install it. Prior to this within the last two weeks I had experienced once or twice difficulty in shifting. I had to use extra force to downshift from 3rd to 2nd to 1st. But was fine after that....
