Something doesnt sound good.. Need opinions.

Roll the engine over by hand first and make sure its smooth
Then roll it over with the starter and if it sounds smooth still maybe its something else
Set timing to 12 initial
Dump raw fuel down the carb and start it up it should run okay for at least a few seconds.

Think it would ping that harshly? That would make sense. The left bank isn't responding to the needle adjustment and maybe I have the timing so far off that it just might be a combination of the two. Hmm.. feeling hopeful again. I'll get a compression checker. But I'll screw with the carb and timing a little first. ..

IT IS NOT FROM DETONATION UNLESS YOU HAVE THE VACUUM Connected to manifold vacuum and it is pulling too much vac at idle.
your carb idle circuit is plugged on the one side remove thhe boost venturi and apray all the tiny holes using the long spray nozzle.

Well, the engine turns over smooth by hand, as expected at least. No noise by hand. I adjusted the main float a little and timing a tad lower and it fired right up, but is tapping hard somewhere at the rear passenger bank. Here is a video.

What RPM was that? idle?
Its hard to tell so much is lost between real life and a cell phone video.
You could try using a mechanics stethoscope.
Its possible that it could be a collapsed lifter if its sounds like its on top. To check for that use the stethoscope or remove the valve cover and roll the engine over by hand press on the top of each rocker arm directly above the push rod when the valve is fully closed with no load (lifter on base circle of cam) if the push rod feels spongy when pressed on it is likely that lifter is collapsed

if there is a tivking from a lifter, try to adjust it. if it does NOT squirt oil out like an inch or more and dies not quiet down, it is not likely a lifter.
put a ruler across your rocker studs to see if one is high. if it is, your stud is pulling out.
if it is not, you might have a cam lobe gloing flat.
drain the oil and drag a magnet thru it. if it gets metal it is a bad sign.
does it have a big cam?
are your rocker studs screw in?
are your lifters made by comp cams?
exactly what oil are you using?
when did this start?
how many miles on eng?
