289 cam question !!
hi everyone
I am trying to decide what cam to get for my mustang. I don't want something that will make it idle too rough and I still want to afford driving it everyday.
i have a 289 rebuilt, edelbrock 289 performer 4v intakes, flowmaster serie 44 exhaust, tri-y doug's headers if that help !
thanks !
Mathieu

We need a bit more info. We need to know:
Heads
Pistons
Compression ratio
Rear end gear ratio
Transmission (a/t or m/t)
And probably a couple other things I'm forgetting that Barnett will likely ask for

lol, if you are not 100% positive about your compression ratio just give us the casting number off the heads and it would beyond helpful to know if your pistons are dished or flat top.
if you want quicker acceleration and you have freeway gears you need to change them but your greeway speeds will be reduced to some degree or you can just rev the eng higher.
typically in my experience the comp xe256h and xe262h are very popular cams for a mild boost in hp. xe268h is way too big for your app and anything smalller than the xe256 is way too small for anybody.
you can also cheat and run 1.7 rockers on your current cam.
you may need screw in rocker studs.

hi;
is that the head number ir the block number?
if you have a 2 barrwl C cide engine you have low compression so you are limited to the xe256h cam imo. if you mill your heads to increase your compression you can run the xe262h cam.
if you run 3.50 gears, with either cam your freeway cruising speed will be around 64 mph.
if you want to go faster on the fwy then use 3.23 or 3.40.
the 3.23's are not super fast off the line but are decent with a 4 speed. the 3.40's are good off the line.
imo, fix your compression, run the xe262h cam and 3.40 gears and burn some rubber.

for my head number only see 65 and 289 on it !
so if i only want to put a cam , the xe262h was not good because you mentionne to fix my compression...
thanks for your help !!!

hello;
no prob, you're welcome.
now listen, is your car a C code or an A code? please read my post again.
we really need to know if your pistons are flat on too or not.
if you have no idea, we can only guess, that is not good for you.
1. if you want all bottom end power then put in the xe256h.
2. if you want more mid range put in the xe262h and advance it 3 degrees with a cloyes double roller adjustable timing chain.
3. if your pistons are flat, just run the xe262h as delivered.
