Default 64 1/2 carburator holley 4V 289 D code

My Carburator is leaking from the accelerator pump and it will not send gas to the carb and the car will not start. My issue is should I replace the carb $300+ or buy a rebuild kit and try to rebuild $35. This seems to be the orig carb with the heat activated choke. holley 4160 . is it difficult to rebiuild?

Or you can take it to a carb shop to have it professionally rebuilt for about $100? Look at it this way, you can screw it up 8 times before you reached the cost of a new carb, or a shop can muck it up 3 times before reaching the same cost. its only as hard as you make it, go for it, what do you have to loose. Just take your time, pay attention, and lay it out in order, and return it in the reverse order. There's a ton of info on holley rebuilds on the net.

hello;

holley is not the orig carb.

buy a parts kit. it will have the pump. the ;pump housing may be warped so surface in on a piece of 280 - 320 sand paper on a granite counter top or window pane next to the frame.

there is a small ball bearing in the hole the screw goes in that holds the boost venturis in. this can get stuck. spray carb cleaner in the hole. the squirters will not work until this ball is free. do not drop it in the eng.

Yuck... It's a D version. The emissions carb. I would (and have) get something else. The D is hard to build. Maybe I'm not good at it, but when I went to a used 4160 Holley and rebuilt it, the D went in a box never to be seen again.

Edit.. I think I read this wrong.. if you are rebuilding the 4160, great! It's easy. If you can find the Holley carb book on Amazon buy it, you will be a carb master.

I run a pair of 4160s and the only challenge on the rebuild will be making sure that the balance tube rubber O rings are seated properly. It might be just me, but I had issues making sure that my balance tube wouldn't leak.

Also, don't through away any old pieces until you get it running good. There will be a pair of flat copper washer things that the balance tube goes through. They will be embedded into your front and rear bowl gasket. I messed up and tossed my rear bowl one, that one that was attatched to the throttle plate circuit thing. It will be embedded into your gasket. My gasket was cardboard...yea that old..your gasket should be blue or black which will make the copper washer thing a little bit easier to spot. If your carb has cardboard gaskets, then a rebuild is most definitely in order.

Just like Barnett stated about the accelerator pump bearing/check valve. Make sure that it can move freely. Yours probably needs that and a nice new rubber diaphragm in there. Check your pump squirter also. There is a pointing down pin inside of it as well as little O ring gaskets.

Like the others said about the books and you can youtube a good Holley step by step video as well.
