Default Correct Windshield

At the point in my 68 fastback project where I need to install the front and rear glass. The car originally came with all tinted glass but the front windshield was badly delaminated so I had to replace it.

All the major vendors offered a tinted windshield but only if you purchased the entire glass kit (about $1,000). Since my door glass and back window were in great shape, didn't want to replace them.

When I was in Charlotte for one of the car shows, I stopped by NPD and picked up one of their clear windshields with the shaded band across the top.

Since I building a Bullitt replica, not real concerned about exact originality, but don't want to make an obvious mistake.

Were 1968 Mustangs available with tinted glass but with the banded windshield? Or if you got tinted glass, the windshield was always tinted.

If I have to have a tinted windshield, can anyone recommend a vendor who will sell just the windshield.

Many thanks!

I don't think they were offered completely tinted? The band on the top with a light tint was factory, in addition to clear iirc.

Safelite will come to your house and do it for a reasonable price, and they offer a Carlite windshield, which is an OEM quality replacement with the light tint and the band. The tint is very minimal, only a few % I think, but is a UV filter.

Safelite would be the last company you would ever want to call. You need a company that knows how to install the older ones.

Safelite did know how to install older ones. They had a supervisor come out and do it who has been replacing windshields for over 30 years.

The local glass shop didn't even know the windshield needed a rubber seal.

You got lucky if they had a guy that knew how to install one. It's pretty hard to swallow that the other shop didn't know it needed a gasket.

I think it's getting harder to find people that know how to work on older cars in general. Or even find people that have a clue about anything these days.
