I just finished installing the rear glass and windshield on my 1968 fastback. I ended up doing it myself and it turned out to be easier than I thought it would be. I now need to finished putting the sealer around the outside edges of the glass and installing the chrome trim.

For those of you who have done this, any information or feedback would be greatly appreciated. I realize the trim has to be installed right after the sealer so once its in and covered in sealer, it would be a nightmare to remove it. So, I want to do it right the first time.

The main thing is to use the correct sealer but that stuff is terribly messy to work with, I think its polyurethane. I was able to get my back glass and windshield installed, water tested and no leaks. I had a tough time getting there, however, another story. Make sure you get a good idea by watching videos of correct installs and how to proceed. The trim was easy if all of your clips are installed and solid. Good luck.

Interesting... couple things I noticed as different/odd, maybe I'm just ignorant about vintage car windshields but, why did you put sealer both on the gasket and the windshield opening on the car?

Modern windshields you only have to worry about the glass. Yes, they do have some mold/trim around them but it's very thin usually and does not require the sealer be put on the windshield gasket, just around the opening of where the windshield gets put on the car.

Is the type you installed called an encapsulated windshield?

Installing an older windshield is entirely different than a newer one. An encapsulated windshield is one that has the outer trim molded on from the factory. You need plenty of sealer between the gasket and the body or else it will leak.

Yes there are two channels to worry about sealing, the channel that holds the glass and the channel that attaches to the car. Both need to be sealed, and don't be shy about using sealer.

Most modern glass installers have no clue how to install these type of dual channel gaskets.
