New exhaust for 68
I have a 68 coupe with a 289 and i am looking to get a new exhaust for it and have some questions. I currently have a set of Hedman shorty headers that i want to put on and i was thinking of installing a Flowmaster American thunder 2.5 inch exhaust. My question is, is there a good way, or do they make intermediate pipes to connect the shorty headers to the end of the exhaust or do i need a shop to build something custom. I have not found any H pipes that will connect to the shorty headers and i cant believe there is no simple way to do this. I already have the shortys so i would prefer not to have to sell them and buy tri-y's or long tubes. Any help on this would be great.

While a shop could weld you up something with flanges that would go in between the shorties and the American Thunder system, it wouldn't make sense to do so, nor would I recommend it.
What I do recommend:
1) Pick the mufflers you want. There are plenty of youtube videos that will give you a good idea of which mufflers sound like what. Keep in mind that you only want to be listening to mufflers on cat-less cars, as catalytic converters will change the sound profile.
2) Buy the mufflers.
3) Go find a reputable muffler shop. Maybe start by calling a couple auto shops in the area (performance-specific, if possible) and seeing who they recommend.
4) Bring the mufflers to the shop and ask them to weld you up a complete exhaust system with your shorty headers. Not only will this likely be cheaper than an out-of-the-box exhaust system, but it will actually fit. Out of the box systems can't account for the vast variety of header and vehicle dimensions they're designed to fit. They all need a bit of tweaking. At the end of the day, you get a better quality product from an experienced muffler shop.

Thanks for the info. I was looking and i was thinking of getting these Pypes head pipes (http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/ite...asp?T1=PYP6+01). They say that they mate from a stock manifolds, which the Hedman shorty say replace, to a performance exhaust. I know its not a perfect fit but it would be less work and cost when i take it to a shop to install then having them build custom pipes. Also is there a big enough difference in Flowmaster to Magnaflow to make the cost difference worth it. I just use the car as a weekend cruiser and something fun to drive.

what cost difference . . unless you need every hp you can get, just buy the mufflers that sound good to you.
