Default 68 steering shaft, inside 67 column, connecting to a rag joint/short shaft box

I have replaced all of the front suspension components on my 67 fastback because was long overdue, and I want a fresh "new" baseline for the front suspension. The only thing that has not been touched yet is the steering box. My assumption is that once the box is replaced, that "slop" in the steering wheel (back and forth play) will go away finally. THEN, I will have as close to "new" as possible.

I want to replace the existing 67 LONG shaft steering box with a rebuilt 67 SHORT shaft steering box. I would rather not use the 68 collapsible column at this point as I understand I will have the change out the pedal at the very least.

My thoughts:
1. Buy a rebuilt 67 SHORT shaft steering box from one of the vendors.
2. Pull the steering shaft from the 68 steering column. (which I have in my parts collection)
2. Put that shaft in my existing 67 steering column that is in the car.
3. Buy a new flex coupling (rag joint) assembly to connect the 68 steering shaft to the "new" rebuilt SHORT shaft box.

Any reason why this wouldn't work??

Then you do have a chance of removing the slop with manual. Not the case with power.
Hopefully someone here can answer your questions.

Ford changed to the collapsible column 1/2 way through the 67 model year so what pedal do you need to change? Our 67, originally with a 6cyl 3 speed stick, manual steering has the collapsible column. It was manufactured in January of 1967 being the 148,712 made.
The collapsible column adds a lot of safety in a front end crash.

I thought I had read a few different write ups in the forums that fitting the collapsible column between 67 pedals was a problem. Given your comment above, I did some more searching and found this article:

They didn't seem to even mention the pedals! Well, maybe I will have to clean up and paint the 68 column (to black) and see if it goes in!!

Make sure you don't loose those T-bolts! They are almost impossible to find.
