Default possibly trading my bike for a 65 Mustang

Hey all,
I don't ride my bike enough, and even though it is fun to have and ride I am going to try and sell it or trade it for something I can work on, either a Truck or a 65-68 mustang.

I had a guy email me offering to trade his 65 V8 mustang for my bike. The bike is worth about $8000 and I want to make sure it is a fair trade.

My question is: What do I need to look for in a 65 to make sure I am not getting a bad deal? What does an $8000 mustang look like to you guys? If you were buying an $8000 mustang what would you make sure to check before signing the paperwork?

I don't know how to do basically any body work so I would want the best body possible, how nice of body should $8000 get me? I do know how to work on the motor and it is a lot easier for me to learn, so if it is running that is about all I care about in that category, but obviously I would want the best deal I can get, so with a body that doesn't need work how much would I expect to need to do at $8000?

I am in Southern California, so rust shouldn't be too much of an issue , but it could be, so where are the problem areas I need to check? Floors of course, door jambs? trunk? engine compartment? Cowl?

Just figured I would get some info before I get a chance to take a look at this mustang.

Thanks for all the help in advance!

.
you should have it inspected . . where do you live?

the body should be original sheet metal with a few small dings and maybe a 1 inch rust spot in the lower front corner of the door.

good running engine that doesnt smoke. good mechanical and registered.

Haha yeah... didn't even think of getting it inspected, I love feeling like an idiot for good reason.

And thanks for the other tips, so basically no rust, but if it exists make sure it is smaller than a quarter. and make sure it runs well enough to be registered.

Thanks again for the help.

no . . it should be registered. cars that are not registered are often cars that needed work so they could not be driven far or safely. if its registered there's a higher probability that it is mechanically reliable.

Get on your back and give the pans and subframes a good going over too. 8k for a run of the mill 65 coupe, that thing should be pretty solid with only niggly issues to deal with and I would expect it to be roadworthy.

hard to say . . the paint is cheap 1 day paint but it is an orig calif car so the body might not have much rust.

if you sit in the drivers seat and rev the engine to around 1/3rd throttle and it vibrates it likely needs a rebuild.

I am going to pass on both mustangs. I have my 2014 and I should really worry about selling my bike and using the money to get more out of debt.
Thanks for all the advice, I will still buy an old mustang someday, just not anytime soon .

Thanks again for the help!
