1966 289 2v hiss under hard acceleration
I was looking at buying a pretty nice 1966 hardtop that has the original 289 and autolite 2100 setup. It's a 4 speed top loader transmission. The owner has taken off the original ain't cleaner and put on one of those "high performance" chrome ones.
The car starts right up idles really nicely and drives great. However I noticed that when I really punched the throttle I heard a hissing noise. It sounded sort of like a turbocharger waste gate noise. It didn't impact drivability. When I parked the car I investigated further and the hiss seems to be coming from the carb and intake area. I couldn't see any vacuum lines as it's an all manual steering and brakes car.
Any idea what this might be and should it deter me from buying the car?
Thanks!

Air rushing through the ventures... Ive never heard an autolite but the carbs ive had in the past all make some type of noise in varying degrees when punched....I cant hear them over the engine inside the car but outside with hood up you can.
They will also start to hiss if you get the idle rpm too low.

I don't like that induction hiss from open element air cleaners which is why I put the dual snorkel base (sans the snorkels) from an 85 GT on the fastback. It cut that annoying whistle out completely.

fastbackford 351, Nice engine job. It looks like you have a small radiator, was this a transplant? Is the top hose ever nicked by the fan? We did a transplant of an 87 302 into a 67 old 6 cyl. The inlet on the 87 is driver side so we could not use a 67 v8 radiator and left the old 6 in which worked in the winter but a little small for summer and the fan would sometimes hit the upper hose. We have since gone to a later radiator with the radiator inlet closer to the edge of the radiator so there is a lot of room. Just wondering if on your car the fan hit because it looks close.

Thank you.
The radiator in that picture was a small block replacement that was in the car for about 20 years before I swapped it out for a big block 4 core radiator a couple years ago. The temperature use to creep up if I had to sit in traffic for very long but now it's not a concern.
Never had a problem with the clearance between the fan and the hoses so it's just the angle of the shot. The fan is from a '75(?) LTD that had the cooling package and is a 7 blade factory flex fan.
With the big block radiator I can sit at idle creeping through traffic and it won't get above 195º.

Thanks for the info. We went to a 3 core since the engine isn't that rad. The first one sent from JEGs confused us until we found that someone had put a 64 Nova cross flow into the wrong box. Is that a rubber cover on the distributor? Sorry JMCGILL. We have an Edelbrock on a 600 cfm Holley and it doesn't seem to make the sucking sound. Could be the paper filter is more dense. Also the pipes a kind of loud.
