Default EPAS (electrical power assist steering) questions on a '66

Just had a EPAS system I got from CJ's installed and I'm wondering...

I have a manual steering rack with the EPAS and now as I drive, it seems like I have to "pull" the wheel back to center as I come out of a turn. The wheel does not like to "center" itself as much any more which makes for some numb steering sensations. Im wondering if this is normal for the EPAS or is it "tunable"?

Stock suspension, except that I did the Shelby mod to the a-arms (moved the mounting points down about an inch). Its got a street alignment. Not set up for oversteer or anything yet for track duty.

so +5 deg?

It might be worth getting it double checked...my local Les schawb tire place will check alignment for just about free...

Unfortunately I cant give any input of the EPAS system.

You need more caster with power steering. Caster has nothing to do with track setups and wearing out tires. Manual steering has very little caster to make turning the steering wheel easier but it doesn't re-center itself very well.

I didn't need to adjust anything after I had EPAS installed, but maybe mine was already where it needed to be. The car naturally comes out of turns. My car has also had the Shelby drop - if that makes any difference.

The EPAS is adjustable - have you tried different settings to see if it makes a difference?

Adjustable as far as the potentiometer? Or is the unit itself adjustable?

Ill run it over to the alignment shop and see what happens.

I meant the potentiometer. I had to play with it a bit before it felt right to me. But my steering wheel's return-to-center was never a problem. I guess I got lucky.

Typiclly to get +5 caster on a 66 you'll need adjustable strut rods. I have the global west adjustable strut rods and negative wedge UCA. I could run 9 deg of caster if I felt like it with that setup...5 deg would probably be idea...you probably dont want to run more than 7.

I have the TCP power rack and pinion...I run 4 deg and its awesome.

If you are sitting at 1 or 2 deg you'll want to see if you can get 5 out of it.

OK. Two alignment shops later and its still a problem. Im thinking is probably just the combination of a manual rack, (and now that I think back, a power steering box), and the power steering assist unit. The combination of the mix-mached pieces just doesn't play well.
