Default 68 289\302 Build

Hey all, new to the forums here but figured I'd throw some of my questions out there. I have a 64.5 with a 170ci strait six, I purchased a 68 289 out of a mustang I plan on putting in the car. Upon disassembly I noticed 302 was stamped on the block. I know 67-68 was a transition year for ford and they mixed some parts. The crankshaft is shot and needs to be replaced. My question is can I install a 2m 3.00 stroke crankshaft with 289 rods and pistons. I also plan on keeping the 289 heads for now but possibly replacing them later. I'm not sure if installing a longer stroke crankshaft will affect the way the compression. Also don't want to shove my piston into my head. This is my first engine build any help is appreciated.

I purchased my '68 a couple of years ago, it's FAR from original! It also was originally a 6 cyl. A previous owner pulled the 6, and dropped in a 289, with 302 heads. Not sure of the internals other than he put in a larger than stock cam in it. I've heard that the 289 block with 302 heads is quite popular, not sure of the other way around. Truthfully, I'm surprised you haven't gotten a response from anyone yet. Usually questions get responded to rather quickly around here. Probably lots of folks on vacay. Hope you can get the answer you are looking for soon. If I get a chance, I'll ask "my guy", and get back to you as soon as I can.

the blocks are the same...peronally if it was me id be building a roller motor block with a one piece rear main seal..

explorer 5.0's from 96-97.5 have GT40 heads(cobra) and a roller cam from the factory you can find a motor at a LKQ on the last weekend of the month for half off(probably less than 100$) with those heads and a new cam youll easily make 300hp...
