Default Sputtering when given gas

So was having some issues starting hot but yesterday it started to sputter when given gas. It will smooth out on light pedal but when given gas it's a sputter/hesistation.

THen at low speeds I got a little back fire shifting down gears.

Is it a carb issue? If so, ideas?

not good at all on carbs.

Definitely sounds like a carbon issue. Maybe the accelerator pump issue. Just rebuild it. Carbs are easy to rebuild even if you don't know how. Just get a clean work space and a new carb rebuild kit and follow the directions.
Rebut kits are usually about $25

Check your vacuum line to the distributor. SOunds like the Vacuum advance is not advancing the spark when you let off the gas, so it is way retarded.

Okay, I started with the Vacuum advance since it's not on the carb, path pf least....

I was not able to get any vacuum to accumulate when pumping with the manual vacuum pump. I get the initial vacuum but when I go to pump again the vacuum that applied already is gone that fast. I assume it should not leak air back in and vac should accumulate, yes? So I have to see if I can just get a new diaphragm for the distributor then see where I am at.
Then I still need to test after that I am getting vacuum from the hose from the carb.

Thanks and will post back

Well, my Mallory unilite is one that I can't get a replacement Vac Adv Canister for it. So I spend smaller money to buy one to just get a vac adv. or I buy something else. MSD is over $400 any thoughts on what to get from like 200 - 300?

I did not buy a new distributor, I took part the Vac Adv. Canister and patched the diaphragm while I figure out what I want to do.

All is back and working much better outside timing I have to do as well as a carb adj.

Thanks
DOn

did you use that liquid rubber they have on TV? The one that makes a screen door into a boat? Or, a tire tube repair kit?
