Default Water bypass question (351C)

Went to replace thermostat & water pump (car has been sitting a couple of years) and noticed the heater hoses also had to be replaced. Removed the hose that connects to the block (outbound hose to heater core) and the tube was rotten even with the block. Using a punch I got the remnants lossened up but they fell down in the hole out of reach. Can I pull the head and get access to that water chamber or will I need to pull the freeze plug near there and try using a magnet or something? Or is there another way to skin this cat?

Thanks
D

F that...just run it...if its as I think those items will just chill out in the water jacket I dont see them becoming interfered with anything other than perhaps the pump which is unlikley or the radiator, heater core which wont really care... They arent going to get stuck in valves or pistons....
