Default 70 M1 need help with possible steering column collapse

I went to to replace my rag joint and noticed upon replacment that the gap is huge. It must have been like this all along.

the original rag was mushroomed so it as hard to tell b4 i took it apart

im trying to pull down the inner shaft commin gout of the fore wall but it wont budge.

any advise on how to accomplish this.

if i have t live with it i can install longer safety pins. do you think car is safe to drive.

Loosen the clamp at the floor plate (1/2) and the 3 9/16 nuts holding the column at the dash (there slotted) and slide the whole column down

yeah I see the horse collar near the toe plate. always wondered what that did

where are the 3 9/16. I took 6 out of the lower column under the shroud. I see a bracket above that up in the dash it self. is that what I need to loosen

do you think I can get 3/8: out of it

also can the shaft be slide in with the rag attached. I hate to have to dig in to that again.

its getting cold may have to leave it until spring. do you think its OK to drive as is in the meantime. last night I put a longer threaded rod in place of the smaller pin so there's meat there now to catch should the rag fail

It looks like the bottom has been moved down the spline. I would replace the joint and position the spline side up the steering box input shaft if needed. The picture doesn't show the gap very large. You can see the top of the spline shaft sticking out of the collar on the lower part so you have room.

The inner shaft should be able to slide in the column. Mine was totally seized with dried grease. I removed the whole column and pulled out the inner shaft and cleaned and lubed it. It then slid down onto the rag joint correctly.
