Default 68 Engine Swap

Got a 68 with a 200 6 and 3 spd manual. Gonna drop a 289 in it and was wondering if the 3 spd will hold up. I have a very capable C4 waiting in the corner but if the 3 spd will work I would just as soon use it. Thanks in advance!

pretty sure the 289 was offered with a 3sp too... not sure if the gear ratios are the same for the 6cyl vs 8cyl though

Was the 289 originally with a manual? If so the 3 speed should work and be more fun.

Not sure if it was or not. All I know is it came out of 67 Mustang. I thought I had heard the 3 spds that were on 6cyl engines were weak and couldn't handle the V8's. Guess I will try it and see. Thanks!

My 66 came new with a 3 spd manual. I upgraded to a t5. you will be fine with it and it will work perfect.
If its in your budget, i would install a good set of heads and a cam on the 289 prior to installing it. it will be much better.
or if you can, wait and get a good 302 crate engine with a few upgrades. I am on my 4th engine. they keep getting more power each time i burn them up. If you can, bite the bullet and just go big from the beginning.

Remember the entire drive train uses weaker components in a 6cyl car than in a V8. Rear end, spindles, brakes, and most importantly springs. I believe the sway bar is also smaller. These items can be upgraded over time but will likely need to be changed at some point. It is a good time to upgrade to disc brakes and better springs anyway.

Yeah I plan on doing a 5 lug upgrade. I have a complete 8" rear out of a 68 fastback, plus I have a complete front suspension from my brothers 68 coupe. Gonna do the disc brake swap on the front as well. Gonna hook up the 3spd, but I'll have the C4 ready just in case!
