Default 64 1/2 or 65

This might be stupid but how can I tell if my car is a 64 1/2 or a 65? It is 99% original and I'm the second owner of it so I know what been replaced and what hasn't.

The 64 1/2 Mustangs were first produced in March of 64, and the first 65's were first produced in August. So, dedifer your VIN. http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/students/Blommel/

it is simple, if a Ford's vin starts with a 5, it is a 65....There are early 65's with generators and late ones with altornators. Before anyone starts yelling about the differences, the very first production Mustang sits in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI, and they call it a 65!

http://www.hfmgv.org/museum/aal/mustang.asp

Please tell Ford that they are wrong and there is a 1964 Mustang, even though all the VIN's start as a 65 and there are no 1964 part numbers...

The biggest visual differences are the 64 1/2 has a generator and a big horn. 65 has an altenator and 2 small horns. There are a lot of little differences but some are confusing because they also came on some early 65's, like the clip on door handles

actually, there are 2 horns on an early 65, and they are mounted on the frame rails, but please show me ONE Mustang with a 1964 VIN.

the 1964 engine codes were different from the 65. 64 had engine codes U,F,D. whereas 65 has engine codes T,C,A,K,K. check the VIN on your car, if the 5th digit in your Vin is a U,F, or D, your car is a 64, if it is a T,C,A,K, or K, it is a 65.

it is a myth that there is a 1964 1/2 Mustang, it was created by entusiasts, to try to explain the differances between the early and late 1965 Mustangs. If you really wanted to be acurate, it would be 1965 and 1965 1/2 Mustangs, since even in Ford's advertisements, they call it a 1965! Yes, the car was introduced in 1964. The 2005 was introduced in 2004, that is how car manufactures work, Chevy has already introduced the 2007 Tahoe!

Please show me ONE Mustang from the 60's that has a VIN starting with a 4

They all start with a 5.......it's the build date that separates the two. From March-August is a 64 1/2, and from August on were considered 65. Not a myth.....

then by that logic, all Mustangs built after 02-15-68 are 68 1/2 Mustangs since they changed the entire quarter panel design and rear marker reflecter.

I know for a fact that Ford used whatever parts that they had laying around, the 22nd car made in San Jose had one late 65 headlamp bucket on the drivers side from the factory.
