Default 289 engine swap. tranny on tranny off?

I'm doing an engine swap on my dad's 68 coupe with a 289 engine. Is it easier to leave the tranny on the engine and pull out the whole engine/tranny combo? He wants to get the torque converter serviced or rebuilt. Does the torque converter need any servicing? The car shifts and idles fine. THANX

If it's a manual tranny, you can pull it with the engine. If it's an automatic, it can be done, but you will need a pretty stout engine puller. You don't need to pull the engine to get to the torque converter though. Just wondering why you want to "service" the torque converter if the tranny is shifting OK.

Separate the two and pull only the engine. Easier, and less chance of scratching the firewall. I agree with Soaring about the converter. Don`t fix it if it aint broken

Yeah, if you don't have a trailer queen engine bay, and you have some other hands to help guide it, the tranny comes out with the engine without a problem. Those automatics are pretty heavy and cumbersome though, so I would think about whether the engine puller (cherry picker) is strong enough.

Thanks guys! I plan on using the trusses in my garage and a chain hoist for my puller. I'm a carpenter and have beefed everything up, so there is no problem there. I figure engine/trans weighs about 600 and I do have help. My long block shipping wight is 360. I read a C-4 tranny is about 200, that plus my intake manifold should be 600.

I don't know anything about torque converters SOARING. When my dad built this motor some 15 years ago he had it done and has some idea it needs it. Hopefully your advice will help me in my case to leave it alone as I see you answer almost every post here and are the moderator, I figure you know what you are talking about. Thank you guys all!
