Default 68 mustang w/ 289....estimated HP?

Mustang Pics.

I know those pictures wont give you much of anything on telling me what hp to expect, but they are there if you'd like to look at them.

I'm going to pay around 1200 for it, and need to know if it's worth it or not. I want a mustang and i'm afraid i've been blinded by the fact that i want one...so I need an outsiders opinion.

I'm going to get headers, dual exhaust, the carb is rebuilt but it's only a 2 barrel so i may buy a 4....not sure yet, it's just an old 289 but i haven't seen/heard it run yet since the battery was dead and there was no gas in the tank. Any input is appreciated.

well its a good price and alot of work but the body seems to be straight! welll here is my opinion: if u just want to start the engine and drive it then yeah do that stuff what u want to do but remember u dont know what really is inside the engine....so i mean it would prolly start up great...but if u want it to run strong! i suggest a rebuild, rebuild the engine and if u want to be a lil faster but a cruiser edelbrocks sells hp kits such as cams, carb, intake, also get an igintion upgrade from msd or from ford racing..... also check under the dash if the wiring seems to be ok.. u dont want a spark to go up and burn u and the car!!!! also the brakes if its a drum in the front i would go with a disk conversion. mustangsplus.com should help u out in all they problems with interior etc.. the works!!! also replace the rubber hoses; the best way to know is if the rubber hoses are soft replace em!!! also i would get a new gas tank with new fuel lines and filter etc.. yes i know alot of work and money but this should get u on the right track trust me its worth it in the end!!!!

Your asking about horsepower numbers, so I assume you are wanting to go fast? 289s are not the engine of choice in this case.

With a 289 under the hood you will spend more money on less performance than a comparable car with a 351.

What exactly are you looking for? Does it have to be a 60s model? If you are looking for mustang that is both inexpensive to buy and build, the only way to go is a fox body.

If you do want both performance and a 60s model IMO the best route is a 351. Big blocks will develop more in the end, but they are much harder to come buy and much more expensive to rebuild.

This is not saying you could not put a 351 in this car at a later date, I am just saying do not expect this car to be fast by any means, even with a new exaust system and a carberator. Put it this way, my 88 5.0L thunderbird 4speed auto (read: tank) outran my friends 1964 1/2 with a 289 and 3 speed. By alot.

Not. A 289 is a great motor that will haul ass if you built it to do so. A 351 is just not the motor the 289 is. If you want to go fast, you will have to speed lots of money. A stock 289 is a dog. I think it has 200hp if that. You can get 350 or more if you want it. The great thing a 289/302 has is quick rev's. That very good for a mustang. A 351 does not rev as quick. Keep the 289 for sure!!!!

Another $.02 from one of the old farts. First off, $1,200.00 seems like a reasonable price. Get the car running and do a compression test and oil pressure check with a good mechanical gauge before you just decide to rebuild it. If it checks out, you may only need to consider changing the timing chain and replacing any seals that are suspect. IIRC, that motor is rated at about 200HP with a 2bbl carburetor. I'm also a fan of the 289. It's a great little motor and can make 300 or so HP pretty easily. Apples to apples, does a 351w have the potential for more HP?, sure but so does a 428, and a 460, and so on . If the motor is sound, you could buy your performance parts now and consider a rebuild at a later date. With the right combination of engine and gears, your car will not be a dog. By the way, don't spend a ton of money on a fancy ignition system. The bottom line is an engine with less than 10.5 or so compression just doesn't need it. A points ignition with good quality components will spark your engine with no problems. If you are not comfortable with points, consider a Pertronics conversion. Crane and Mallory also make good conversions. I converted my 390 to a Ford Duraspark system. Works great, parts are available everywhere and they are cheap enough to keep spares in the trunk. Anyhow, good luck with the new ride.

Well i'm interested in mustangs, prefferably 67-69, but this is the first i've found around here in a long time. The body is good and the doors are stable, the only rust i see is on the vinyl top..

Yes i want it to be a fast car but i'm not expecting a hipo390.

What size engine could i fit in it if i decide to replace it?

Thanks.

Any Windsor, 351C, or FE except the SOHC 427 will fit. The FE's are really tight.

You can make a 289 faster then a 351. stay with the 289.

I don't have alot of money, i live off of a minimum wage job at 30hrs a week. I can't soup up the 289 with super-high performance parts, so if the 351 route is cheaper, i think i'll go with that. I just found 2 more mustangs, 2 fastbacks from what i can tell and i'm going to look at them today....so this post may change anyway.

Thanks for any input.
