Mine dump before the axle and I dont smell exhaust.
One + also happens to be a - that is it kicks up lots of dust. If there is any dust it will kick it up. On the plus side its fun to drive by constructions zones with dust or when there are leaves on the ground as it blows them all away and makes a clear path behind you..Kinda cool. On the down side it gets dust all over the car if the dust cloud catches you or you have to stop.

I never have had an issue with smelling exhaust. I would think having the exhaust routed to the side you would have more of a chance of smelling exhaust. But that is just my thought, I really have no clue. And my buddy had single chambers out the back, WAAAAAAAAAAY louder than my exhaust dumped. Of course it was on a stock 350 monte carlo, but still. Way louder. Go with a set of 2 chamber flows dump it and it will sound like a beast.
I have a 66 coupe with a stock 289 and the mufflers dumped before the rear axles. I love it. When you cruise the in cabin noise can be a little much for some (I love it), some people say dont do it for the simple fact that "when sitting in traffic exhaust is closer to the windows and you can breath it up", I have never experienced this. When you are driving on the highway sounds the same as my buddies with the exhaust routed out the back. I say do it. Makes the back end look clean, you don't have to worry about routing the exhaust over the rear axle, and just plain sounds bad ass.
i agree i have a 65 coupe w/289 and same set up sounds good
