Default 351w in a 66 coupe

im kickin around the idea of putting a 351w in my 66 mustang coupe, the car already has a 302, but lost compression on 3 cylinders and i have a perfectly good running 351w, can i just pull the 302 and drop in the 351? or is there any fab work needed. i did a engine conversion on my old f250 and the engine mounts were universal for the 302 and 351w, do the same rules apply with the old pony cars? and the car has a c4 auto if that helps at all. thanks

You will need swap headers and you might need a different oil pan and pickup on the 351.

yep youll need a front sump oil pan, 351w swap headers, hedman makes a decent set for the money, now the mounts! yes the mounts can and will interchange but, you want to use a specific mount for the 351w swap and the reason for it is because the windsor engine is wider and may (it did for us anyway) cause header to shock tower interference, we got mounts that were slightly higher, it lifted the motor up just enough for the headers to clear but its still very very close! any mustang vendor will know what your talking about when you ask for em. its a very rewarding swap and worth all the headaches. and with a performer intake and a drop base air cleaner it all fits under the stock hood,

Sure will be a tight fit.
Have fun changing the plugs...

Got a 351W in my 67. Not bad. Did have to grind down ONE bolt but plugs aren't too bad to change. Swap was pretty straight forward.

yea i saw your car in the cassifieds, plugs look easier to change than the ones in my f-350, 460 efi but cool beans, with higher engine mounts will i have to raise the transmission at all?

I got the engine to sit pretty well on the old but NEW mounts without much problem at all. So of course I didn't have to raise the transmission at all. Yeah, and I have bad memory so thinking back to it, plugs are easy to change, it's the Chevelle that gives some problems because of a tight fit.

ok, 302 is out and on the stand, what companies carry the "raised engine mounts" for the 351w swap? i looked through laurel mountain mustang, mustangs unlimited and summit and could not find anything. if anyone could shine some light on the subject that would be awsome

And, zggill04, what kind of headers did you get? where did you get them? and how much did they cost?

oh and i also read that i need a different oil pan, and 50 oz 157 tooth flywheel for the 351w, is this true? or can i just use the oil pan and flywheel from my 302?

and should i get a mini starter? or can i stick with the 302 starter?

What year is the 351? I know they went to a one piece rear seal in 83 but I think the 50 in oz weight didn't come till the late 80's or early 90's. I know it was still 28 oz in 83. If so, you can still use the 302 flywheel but not the pan. Sorry. Also, the Hedman headers are pretty good but the back bolt to number 7 and front bolt to number 8 are really hard to get too. Do yourself a favor and get either allen or 12 point bolt!!! I have the 5/16" stainless ARP and I wish I went with those.

well, the 351 is was planning on using was in my 84 f-250, but i bent some rods when i totalled it, its a long story, but the motor was a motor works engine, and i was planning on sending it in for a core and getting a late 60s early 70s 351w, which i believe had a little more horse power than the 84, i know alot of people dont like the napa/motor works remanufactured engines, but i had really good luck with the one im my f-250, and i plan on going the motor works route again.

i was looking on mustangs unlimited and they had headers spefically for the swap i am doing and for a better price than hooker/heddman, when i went through summit they never spefically said if the headers they had were for the swap im doing or not, so i may go through mustangs unlimited for headers and other miscelanious stuff. oh and i have 12 point breslin split lock header bolts so no worries there, for $75 they sure relieve alot of headaches.

speaking of which, what year ford 351w had the most horse power?

and what company do i get the raised motor mounts from?

and can i reuse my 302 starter on my 351? or should i go mini starter?
