Marvel Mystery in the oil was my plan before hearing about the ATF. I'll probably go with MM. I also plan to put some in each plug hole and rotate the engine by hand a few times. Sea Foam in the gas as well.
Do I really need to pull the dist and spin the oil pump, or would cranking it w/o plugs be OK?
I'm not looking forward to pulling the valve cover, although I could paint it while it's off I feel like every time I pull something there is a chance I will screw it up putting it back on. I've never done this before, so I'm kinda nervous....

Can't really mess anything up by pulling the valve cover. When you reinstall it with a new gasket, just make sure not to over tighten the bolts. I believe Fel-Pro offers a gasket with built-in spacers around the bolt holes to prevent over torquing.
And yes, it really is a good idea to prime the oil pump beforehand. You're talking about spinning the crank a couple times slowly, vs rotating the oil pump driveshaft multiple times very quickly.

I drained my old 1979 F100's 302 back in 99 and filled it with deisle, ran it for ten minutes and then drained and filled it up with some straight 40 weight as reccomended by an uncle and it worked out well.. I was scared as hell to do it, but it worked.. That motor is still running strong to this day. That thing was a beast..

Thanks guys, I'll pull the valve cover this weekend and give it some paint. Spring Break starts next Friday, and I'm going for start-up that week. Anything I should look for when I pull the cover?
I heard the same thing about ATF in the oil. Long term it sounds like a bad idea. A lot of people advised me against it also.
There are plenty of additives specifically made for the oil, and work gradually. If you feel like you want a quick scrub, why not use a motor flush made for that purpose?
Just my 2 cents.

oh i forgot,
not in my actual oil, but atf is the only thing that would free this mess up when i was pulling my pistons...
so its strong stuff, and you could use it down spark plug holes, but why not us marvel...
Wow Joe... That's Nasty! I don't think I've got anything that bad. I just want to make sure I get it right before I start it. No need to make anything worse.
I'll post a new thread soon with everything I've done to it so far, and check to be sure I'm not missing anything.
