visit www.clickclickracing.com these guys are the AOD experts. talk to silverfox. he custom builds a lot trannys, shiftkits, valve bodies and other upgrades for the AOD. this tranny has actually become very popular for drag racing. manually shifting the aod is fun as well. you start in 1st. bump it up into 2nd, then you go back down into first to hold it in 2nd. then bump back up when ready for 3rd. a wratchet shifter from B&M makes it a lot of fun and more consistent. I outgrew the need for that stuff 15-20 years ago. Rumpity-rump is cool and all, but having a car that your wife actually enjoys riding in or even driving goes a long way. Burning the tires off at every stop light is not my interest. Cruising to Galveston for lunch without using a tank of gas - now we're talking.

Go rent to movie Colors. Robert Duvall tells a story to Sean Penn about two Bulls. I think that applies here.

I'd say that makes the AOD a good choice. The first three gears in the AOD are essentially the same as those in a C4, and the 0.67 OD gives you effectively 2.48 overall. That's way taller than a 3.00 and still noticeably taller than 2.80 or whatever is available in that range.

To match the highway economy of the AOD with a 3A, you'd be looking at an axle in the 2.5-ish range. That was the late 1970's approach to fuel economy, before overdrive transmissions of any sort were available for domestic cars, if that helps the mental picture any. A 3.00 axle is at best a compromise between the overall performance that you now have and the economy that you want, but it won't give you a full serving of either.

Never saw the movie, but I think I understand what you're saying. There's a lot more to the world of driving than the first 60 feet from every full stop. (I think a few responents saw "TCI Streetfighter C4" and went from there)

I have just installed an AOD that I had a B&M shift kit added while being rebuilt. The rearend was originally a 2.78 open diff, now it has a 3.55 with a trac-lok. I havent had it on the road yet but my expectations are high for the difference in drivability. I to am past the age of stop light to stop light racing, but....... if the need arises, I also believe in preperation. LOL! My original tranny was an AMX so my flywheel and backing plate were reused. I had to buy a lokar tv cable, c-4 tranny mount, crossmember and dipstick tube. The d/s was shortend. I made a tv cable/ throttle cable bracket for the carb, I was not happy with the options out there. I think you will be more than satisfied with the AOD.

Just making a point that the tranny is not just for cruising. I cruise mine on the highway all the time and im running 4.11s.
