Can I put a 4 valve carburetor on my 67's 289 engine???
I want to put a 4 valve on my 1967 fastback's 289 v8. It has a 2v Carburetor on it. Is this the only one that will fit on my engine. I want to do this to get the extra hp out of my engine. If putting on a 4v carb is not an option, what else can i do to raise my hp? muffler? some kind of intake upgrade? help me plz.
thnx

RE: Can I put a 4 valve carburetor on my 67's 289 engine???
I have a 67 with a edelbrock performer intake and a holley 4160 (4v, 600CFM).
It's my daily driver, and I ocassionally punch it just to remind myself how much power I have.
Before you go out and blow tons of money to beat the other guys with souped up civics, do yourself a favor and get a pertronix ignitor and the flamethrower coil. It replaces the points and adds a little horsepower, as well as the reliability of not having to deal with points corroding/trouble starting. It's about 60 bucks for the ignitor and 30 for the coil. I noticed a little better off-idle throttle after I installed it (i.e. better peeling out). http://www.pertronix.com/
You could also get yourself a K&N air filter. Those things are massive and have a 1 million mile warranty. Theyre pretty expensive, but you have no air flow restriction. K&N filter from summit
With Carburetors, bigger is not always better. You want about 600 CFM for your 289. Buying a 700, or 800 CFM will only flood your engine and create hesitation (not to mention terrible gas mileage).
When you upgrade to a new manifold, try getting a dual plane manifold. They allow even distribution of airflow into the cylinders. It's a little more expensive, but worth it.
RE: Can I put a 4 valve carburetor on my 67's 289 engine???
a 700cfm is probably going to be too much unless you have a pretty dang high performance engine. Not that I like to magazine race, but take a look at this month's mustang monthly, and mustang and fords magazines. There's an article about carb tuning (using a 351W though) and also an article about building a budget 302 block. If you do the calculations for a stock motor, (I can't remember the formula for it, but I have it in my room somewhere) you'll end up with a 450cfm carb being right for a motor that tachs out at 6k rpm's.
