Would the shaft make a noise that could be heard if it was becoming rounded?

The camera is right next to the distributor.

Hmmm... that MIGHT be the sound of the hex shaft slipping....

Might be wishfull thinking, but I would pull the distributor to look at the shaft. Just because...

If you had a way to really get ahold of the top of the shaft you could feesably pull it out to look at the bottom part of the shaft as well.

There is a retainer of sorts that should be on the shaft, but if a person could pull hard enough it would come off

Just stick a gauge on it first, but I wouldn't drive it in the mean time.

If you suddenly developed low oil pressure and mechanical noise at the same time, chances are it's time for a rebuild.

This article now has me worried, where should the needle lie on an oil pressure gauge? mind reads far left, not in the danger zone, but somewhat close.

Does it start out in the low side or does it go low after it warms up? My cam bearings were sticking out of the journals when I tore it down, no oil pressure at idle when it would warm up. I needed a rebuild and now Im good.
