Cool Looking for help with my 1965 200ci.

I have a 1965 coupe with the 200ci. engine/1bbl.carb. It runs great 90% of the time but has developed a slight miss lately. Ive put in new plugs, voltage regulator, had the carb adjusted, etc. but still have the miss in the engine.
It runs and sounds fine at idle speed but the skip really gets noticible at speeds above 40 mph, especially if Im going up hill. When I try to adjust the automatic choke, it does nothing as far as I can tell.
A friend told me the choke plate or butterfly should be completely closed before I start it in the mornings but it never is. It is always open about a quarter inch. In fact, I cant find anyway to make it close completely.
Any ideas on what I should try next?
Any help would be apprieciated.

I have a 2bbl on my 200 and the butterflys are never closed all the way. I have a real small gap, I don't think my old 1bbl closed all the way either.

yeah my 1bbl on my 65 200 does not close all the way. That is just fine and should not be related to your problem.

Have you tried pulling the spark plugs after driving it or checking the old ones? I think that would be a good start. There are plenty of guides to reading the plug condition, such as this one: http://www.atlanticjetsports.com/_techtalk/00000005.htm

Next get an ohmmeter and test the resistance in the spark plugs. The ones I have seem to be around 800-1200 ohms, which is about normal.

I dont think you could force this one closed with a hammer. I have checked the plugs and they still look like new plugs, they've only been in about 400 miles.

Are they white, black, or a brown?

White - too lean
Black - rich
Brown is ideal from what I hear

Mine are black cause I run it rich.

Timing could be off or your points are getting weak. I would try the points first then check timing. It could also be a weak fuel pump.

The fuel pump seems to be working well, in fact, sometimes you can smell gas when the engine starts skipping. I put another new set of plug wires on it yesterday evening and adjusted the idle speed back a little, now its skipping more than it was. Its really got me baffled.

Timing set correctly? If so, is the vacuum advance working?
