When I tore my T-5 apart to rebuild it, I noticed the shifter (which looks like a stocker to me) has the Hurst logo on it. Were Hurst shifters stock, or is this an upgrade? If it is an upgrade, is it a good one?
This is my first rodeo with a T-5, so if this is a stupid question, take it easy on me.

They are a pain in the ass to put back together. I just got one done and I don't think I did it right since the shaft won't spin . I'm already tired of messing with it and it has only been 1 day.
No, Hurt shifters were not stock. I'd recommend a better aftermarket shifter, like a Pro 5.0 or Steeda Tri-Ax. T5's need something with adjustable shift stops to keep from overshifting and bending shift forks. My roommate put a Pro 5.0 in his WS6 T/A and we were very happy with it. I recently dropped a Tri-Ax in my '90 GT project, but it's not on the road yet. It does feel great with the engine off, though

This one does have bolts that act as positive stops. I want to get this thing going and then do the upgrades, I was just wondering if was any better than stock.
Oh, hm. I've seen a couple without shift stops, but if yours has them, good enough. Definitely better than the crappy stock shifter. I'd still recommend a Pro 5.0 or Tri-Ax because they feel sooooo much better, but that's personal preference

if it doesn't spin, something's wrong. make sure you don't have reverse partially engaged or have two different gears engaged. also make sure you engaged the shift mechanism correctly in the synchro carriers (whatever they're called).
I'll try to get a picture tonight. The transmission is a 1986 model (265 ft. lb.) so I'm thinking it WAS an upgrade in the 80's. I can't find a picture that looks like it on the web.
The factory shifter had no adjustable stops and a stamped steel base. It's also got a bunch of rubber isolators in it. The only car I could imagine coming with a Hurst shifter would be an SVO.
