Default Kid in a candy store! junkyard visit.

My son has been bugging me to go to a junkyard, bring your own tools and take parts off type of place. (Pick your Part in Calif.). I kept telling him that it would be a waste of time since our car is a 1964, 170 I-6 and I had been there years ago and most of the cars are newer.
Anyhow we walked through the entire Ford section and only found 5 1980's mustangs, we were heading toward the exit gate and we saw a couple old Fords way off in a corner. I didn't know what they were, since I had never seen them before. They both turned out to be 1960's Ford Falcons that both had the same 170CI Inline 6 that I have (one with smog equip!) How incredible is that! Almost everything on them is exactly the same as my engine! One had a CLEAN newly installed water pump and radiator! I popped the cap and it is CLEAN, copper color inside, no white caking or anything (Radiator), no outside rust and the paint looks NEW!!!!.. since I didn't know if it would fit mine, we left that, but I checked at home and it looks to be the same size and design as mine. So I am going back tomorrow to check it out! I may get REALLY lucky!
We did end up with a new heater/defrost system (under dash unit, since mine is rusted, this one only needs paint on the metal door!), also a 6 blade radiator fan, valve cover with filler/breather cap (exactly like mine but it is blue and embossed with "Power by Ford"!! A "deluxe" version), an original black/yellow autolite coil, w/ Autolite tin tag and wiring harness (my harness is crumbling and missing the coil end plugs, it's the correct harness!), a couple door courtesy light switches and door springs, C4 transmission Inspection cover (mine's missing!"), 5 nice clean sets of black 60's Ford seat belts, an autolite 1100 CD5F-F carburetor with tag and a few misc. clips, bulbs, screws and bolts that I was missing!
All of this for just under $130!!! Buying new (even used at a store) would have cost me several hundred dollars and this stuff only needs to be cleaned up, some rust removed and a new paint job I figured even if some parts didn't work it would be worth it for the price, but so far everything is an exact fit/replacement and if the don't work, I can exchange them! We ended with a ton of parts I never thought I would ever find to help restore this car (a complete heater!). Parts for a 1964 170 are extremely hard to find unless you want to try non-standard parts that come close to fitting. The best part of the day, I found out they have another yard a few blocks away, with a Ford section twice as large! So much fun I might have to get another project car so I can treasure hunt more often.

Sometimes you get lucky with Pick-Ur-Part or Pick-A-Part.

However, I still miss Memory Lane (that was the best picking yard for classics in SoCal). Damn overly restrictive EPA!

I went to the junkyard for the first time about a month ago to look for a stock cleaner for my '73 Ford f-100. It was quite fun and we found one eventually from a newer Ford that fit and worked great

I saw very few Mustangs though. Oldest I saw was like a 74 (ew)

1974- ewwwww- LOL. It's hard to find cars over 30 years old in wrecking yard.

We went driving around looking for a junkyard, and my dad said that a lot of the old ones he used to go to were now gone, including a Mustang junkyard. Made me really sad

The two yards we went to had very little old cars and one of the yards seemed almost completely picked over.

Next time you go down there, across the street and a couple blocks south is P.D.Q., an all Ford salvage yard! Not as big as pick a part but has a lot of 74 and older stuff. FYI

My buds mom calls them "Tourist Traps" with good reason, used to spend hours on weekends and any free time searching for elusive sheet metal and other parts.
