have to agree with what Tad says up there.
timing gun is essential. vacuum gauge a nice to have, but I rely on it so I couldn't do without anymore. A/F meter is insanly expensive and probably only tuners and crazy people have one (and me as i don't believe a word anyone including me is saying without measuring). anyway, i was lucky to pick up LM-1 with exhaust clamp and shipping for 400$.
Don't get us wrong here. you obviously can go ahead and just change to weaker springs and see what happens. If that helps you can always change the combination and see what happens. it will get better or worse or nothing will happen at all.
The problem is though if you fiddle around with it for weeks and then figure the timing wasn't right you can re-do the whole lot again.
So yes ya, for a quick check for your rich condition, try the springs.
As for the timing gun you might just be lucky and one of your friends has one (i just replaced my 20 year old one). Tad is absolutely right, every mechanic has had one.
As for the manifold. it's a recommendation. a dual plane will work better. But still noone says you can't improve what you have without changing the manifold ;-)

That is with the idle running really low, don't know if that matters at all. If I can get up early tomorrow I'll try the rods and jets, see if I can get it running properly and test vacuum again.
And how big an issue is improper ignition advance and timing? As I said, there are no knocks or pings or any problems, even running up past 100 mph (in proper circumstances with proper safety measures taken, blah blah). The car runs through a gamut of speeds and conditions from 30-40 degree temps up to 90+ degrees, all sorts of speeds and no problems at all aside from the general lack of punch and running rich.
