thanks, now i cant find the indicator on the timing chain cover. you said drivers side looking down above the balancer. how close to the balancer is it? It turned out what i thought was at tdc was not so the timing marks werent near the indicator.

Some timing pointers are cast into the front cover, others are bolt on. You haven't mentioned what year your car (or engine) is but the early ones were cast. It's just a protrusion that is real close to the balancer at about the 1 or 2 o'clock position (looking from the front of the motor).

if you have a manual car you can always put it into gear (4th) and move the car forward/backward. this will turn the engine.
the pointer is usually very close to balancer. but depending on engine can be passenger or driver side. can't miss that thing usually. wouldn't get a finger between the pointer and balancer. otherwise would make for inaccurate reading

its an auto 289 with ac making it very dificult to get to the balancer. is it possible that i dont have one? The car is stock completely in the bay exept for an old electronic ignition system so i thought it would be on the timing cover bu i still cant find it. Does anyone have a picture or something i can look at?

You definitely have a balancer, it is between the pulley and the front cover. As for a timing indicator, if it was a bolt on style, it's possible it was removed and not replaced.

Check with some of the Mustang vendors that have on-line catalogs with pictures and search for timing indicator or pointer. Then you'll at least know what it should look like.

But as I said before, if it is a '67 or older it should be cast in. To check this (with engine not running of course) stick your hand down just below the water pump on the drivers side, near the 1 o'clock position. If there is a ~3/8" around protrusion that sticks out 3/4" or so, that's the pointer.

Good luck and report back if you run into further problems.

that came out wrong. I know where the balancer is and the marks on the balancer. What I cant find is the pointer, sory for the confusion. Ill try fishing around for it and see what i come up with. Ifound a picture in my shop manuel that ill try and match it up with, if its not there how would i set the timing

Well the pointer isnt there, so i dont know what the next step would be. The block is from early 65, before the cut off and the car is a 66. I was under the impression that the pointer was supposed to be casted on to the timing cover... However i did find a chalk mark on one of the belts hooked up to the crank shaft pully, could that be a make- shift indicator and another pointer is somewhere else? anyways would I just be able to align it to were tdc is supposed to be base off of the picture in my ford shop manuel? If not what would the next step be? Ill post a picture of where its supposed to be

Its probably not the original timing cover.

I was watching one of the "Power Block" shows a few weeks ago, and they fabbed up a pointer from a piece of welding wire. They simply bent it around a bolt and then snugged it into the timing cover. Of course, you'll still need to identify TDC and then bend the wire so it points to the 0* timing mark on the balancer.

Hope that helps.

Well, you need a pointer, but as a makeshift, you can get the engine to TDC on #1 and align the rotor with the #1 plug wire. That should get you started (may run like crap) and then tune by ear to obtain the fastest idle. Take it for a drive and listen for pinging, which would mean you have it advanced too far.

I'm betting the timing cover was changed to the newer style and a pointer was not added. You should still get one and mount it up. They're pretty cheap. The only other way is if someone sawed the cast in one off, but I can't think any reason why someone would do that.
