If this is what your running and your car is going to be a driver or street car then wouldn't rebuilding the 8 inch and regearing it be the best route? If you have a 5 speed go with 3.50 or 3.70 gears. I would put a traction lock on it too.

I think I would go the upgraded center section route like your ebay link.

Do you plan on going more aggressive with the engine in the future?

I opted to go with a Versailles rear end for my car. I didn't have a V8 rear to start with and thought that the 9 inch would be more than adequate for my setup.

I think sticking with e 8 inch would be easier but, finding the right gears with track-lok seems to be the problem. I'm still looking though, and I guess that ebay link i first put up isn't very reliable or something.

Currie makes a repro Traction-Lok center, except far stronger, with four pinions and better steel. They'll sell you the pieces you need to upgrade the rear you have, or build you a drop-in unit. I'd go with the 3.55:1 ratio, it's an excellent all around choice. Of course, where you drive and how you drive are the critical factors.

I got my 9 inch center section from an ebay seller named RMustang I think. I believe he had 8 inch centers as well. You could check him out. He builds them himself.

It might have been RUMustang or something like that. I got mine with the gears I wanted and traction lock with a fresh rebuild for 400.

Well it's been a while since I responded to this post. About 2 weeks ago I picked up a 8" carrier from a guy on craiglist. It dropped right in and I went from 2.80 to 3.55. But man...I was expecting to notice a huge difference and I didnt...lame!!! I remember my other 69' stang came with a 3.27 rear and a 4spd toploader and man that thing had a awsome launch! so I expecting more or less the same with this new rearend backed up by a 5spd tranny but, it just revs quicker without that much torque..hmm..maybe I was expecting too much

That seems a bit odd. Are you sure that it is actually 3.50 gears?

I didn't see it listed in this thread. Whats the specs on your engine? Is it a stock 289 or 302, or is it modified with cam and heads etc?

Yeah I'm sure it's a 3.50 rearend. on the carrier I marked a spot on the top of the ring gear and I turned the yoke three and a half times until I spotted the mark again. The engine is a late model 5.0 out of a 87 mustang with aluminum intake and a 650cfm edlebrok carb, with an msd ignition, everything else is pretty much stock ( I wonder how much HP I'm pushing with that) but yeah that's pretty much it. did that help at all?

I have basically the same setup on mine, execpt it has a cam that is matched to the heads. I am happy with the 3.50 gears in mine. My car is no race car, but it moves.

All I can think of is maybe your 69 had more done to the engine.
