I have a 9 inch with 3.50 gears and a T5. I think it is a great gear for this setup. If I were to ever change it, I would go with 3.70. My first gear is 2.95.

A lot of it depends on the power too. With a large stroker like a 408+ I wouldn't go with more than a 3.00-3.25 gear.

13.20's with 2.25-2.30 60's, 40+ year old suspension sucks!
Best trap 107.11mph, we'll see what the new intake/carb setup does.
12.80 at 110.5mph NHRA DA corrected

Even with a big motor, it is possible to gear it too tall, and I think you want to look at what happens in 1st gear. I've driven cars that pulled 10 mph per 1000 rpm in 1st and they aren't particularly good in traffic. They are harder on the clutch, because you do end up having to let it slip a little more on every single start that isn't about getting wheelspin. Even 8.5 mph/1000 rpm is somewhat marginal (been there too).

With tires that are 25" or so tall, I think an overall gear ratio of 10:1 in 1st gear ought to be about right. Think 2.95 x axle gear of either 3.25 or 3.50, or 3.27 x 3.00, maybe 3.25 in the axle.

Staryfury, it's the other way around. I have the T5z and it has the 2.9x first gear with the .68 5th. I have a 3.55 diff and 25" diameter tires. I think the gearset is perfect with this combo. It's perfect for around town and I don't ever get into fifth unless I'm doing 50mph or more. I wouldn't have a 3.80 diff if I don't have a 2.9x first gear.

My buddy with a Mopar has the same diff, same tires and has TKO-500, which has a 3.3x first gear and .82 fifth. First gear is useless and he's in 5th by the time he's at 40 mph. So he's buzzing pretty good at 70mph. We're about to change the diff to a 2.94.

Yeah, it's somewhat easy to under or over gear a car. Tall gears can be a pain to drive at low speed, especially in parking lots. I prefer a gear that's towards the tall side mainly for traction control, and then just deal with the low speed/1st gear issue. It all depends on how the car is setup. With my TKO 600 and 3.55's with a 25.6" tire I cruise at 65mph at like 1,950rpm, if I drive really easy I can squeeze around 25-27mpg out of it on the highway, but usual easy driving is around 24-25.

Go with the 3.80's and dont look back.... ive had 3:55's and 4:11's and the 3:55's just wernt enough and the 4:11's are just a little too much. You just got to learn how to shift faster! With the 4:11's and the t5z im cruise 65 at 2400 rpms...

I think I'm just gonna go with this setup

I know about the 8.8 swap, but this I just pretty much drop in and I'm good, no modifying, no, welding, nothing.

Beastmachine67,

I was going to go that route also but i have emailed that guy 4 times and have not recieved an answer back. also if you reads through his feedback you will see less than stellar results. I am not going to trust that kind of money to an ebayer that wont respond even before i buy his product. also you need to send in your core to get that price. so look at doubling the shipping costs.

you will be about $800 beffore you buy the gasket and the lube.

Here is what I am doing. 8.8" rear end out of 97 exploder ($200). It comes complete with trac loc, 3.55 gears or 3.8 gears, and disc breaks. Then an additional passenger side axel is $70. I am going to cut it down and do the fab work myself.

so after eveything including the price of new perches and powder coating i think i will be about $400. i will use another $400 to convert my front to disc and then i will will have the gearing that i want, a nice pretty powder coated rear end, and complete disc breaks for $800.

you cant beat the price and i also think that this is what owning a street car is all about. doing the work myself, saving money and having the satisfaction of knowing I did not pay someone else to do it.
And besides i am finging that everytime i use another person to provide me with parts, labor or service i am let down. I guess i just expect to get what i pay for and i usually do not.

Damn that sounds shaddy, that guy didn't even get back to you?? hmm...I guess I gotta see what else I can do. I really didn't want to have to deal grabbing a used part and having to worry about welding, I don't even own a welder or know how to weld or even know where I can take it to get welded..
