Default is it a real GT?

Hey guys. My boss just got his hands on a 1968 Mustang convertible and it is possibly a GT. A couple of people here think its just a v8 with all the GT stuff added on. We dont have a build sheet to prove it. What are some of the best ways to tell if it is a real GT or not? It has all the badging and wheels. It has the quad exhaust, and the flip down gas cap. It also has the foglights with what looks to be factory wiring. Any other clues that would tell if its a gt or not? thanks for your replies.

For a 68, the definitive answer is "GET A MARTI REPORT"

ok...so it looks like its a fake GT... we have a marti report and it doesnt say anything about being a GT anywhere on the page. The biggest giveaway was that it says it was ordered with wire wheel covers. thanks for the info guys. and not sure about the GTA badge, ill have to look at that.

Default GT

GTA was only used in 67. so it could be real. What's the VIN. Some engines did not qualify for the GT option in 67 like the I6, not sure about the 68. Marti is the definitive answer.

Yes, the "GTA" was used only in 1967 on Mustangs. The styled wheels were included on GTs in 68. The buck assembly tag is not conclusive, you can get those with whatever you want on them. The Marti report would clearly state that the car was equipped with the "GT" option. Lacking that, it was not a GT. The only engine that could go either way was the "J" code 302 4V, the 5th digit of the VIN is the clue here. What engine code does it have?

it is a C code car. 289-2V. Nowhere on the Marti report does it say anything about being a GT.

OK, that covers it, the GT could not be ordered with the C code engine in 68.

On the other hand, it's still a nice looking car.....for a fake.
