So I have a question about three point seat belt installation. I was thinking of using the roof as a third point to mount the seat belt but was wondering if it would be safe to directly weld the belt to the roof rather than use a mounting plate? Thanks!

That is true, but I didn't want to have to drill holes in the roof of the car and I figured I could grind it off if I really needed to remove it. I'd put the belt behind the shoulder but I understand it is safer higher up because if it is mounted too low it can cause your spine to compress in an accident. Not sure if that or your head going into the steering wheel is worse.

I'd rather have my spine compress. Permanent back injury < permanent brain damage.
If you mount it too high, you risk driving your neck into the belt. That could either cause major spine / neck damage, or potential sever an artery. Ideally, you want the belt to go across your chest and over your left shoulder as low as possible. You want to keep your body as firmly planted to the seat as you can.
Imagine what would happen if someone hits your driver's side door at a moderate speed. Your head and other loose appendages will fly towards the impact. Would you rather have the seatbelt equal with your neck, or equal with your shoulder?

You don't need to drill or weld to the roof at all. I added the support brackets to the roof support last year. Its quite easy actually. There is a small square hole over the rear quarters. I made 2 1" cuts here to open it a bit in order to slide the bracket in. Drilled 2 holes to bolt the bracket in and then bent back and welded up the square.
I'm just heading out but I'll try to find the pics tonight for you.
I used the Wesco belts with the 7" drop sash. This drops the belt point down so its not up against your neck.
Just think about it.. where on any new car does the belt go over your shoulder and then downwards?
