Default I am picking up a 8.8 exploder rear end

tomorrow. I found one with 3.55 gears and a track loc from a 95 with 28k miles on it. I am going to cut it down to fit into my 66 coupe. I have been reading up on it and i think this is the way to go.

SO i will add to this thread as i work through it. The doner car has front end damage so i think it will be in great shape. I will check it for striaghtness before i start the work..

First picture post coming tomorrow.

Oh yeh, i am getting the rear end for $150. complete with rotors and calipers.

Any thoughts to welding on some 9" tube ends"? No more "C" clips to worry about, inner and out races on the bearing...
I wouldn't get too excited about checking straightness until you are ready to weld. Despite the myths, these are pretty stout rear ends.
I'm looking forward to your build thread.
Good luck,

Sine you have to do some modifications anyway to make it fit, definitely do something bout getting rid of the C-clips. An axle spit out the side because the C-clip failed can really trash a 1/4 panel.

The disc brakes will hold in the broken axle. The exploder 8.8 is teh win for Jeep TJ / XJ swaps for this reason.

Not familiar with the c clips! I went to pick it up today and it wasnt pulled from the donor yet. The thing had hardly and damage to the front. It should be really straight.

So i cant take any time to work on this over the weekend i will get my start on tuesday. Im gonna hit the coast with the family.

i picked up my rear end on monday. IT WAS THE WRONG ONE. once i got it home i noticed that it did have 3.55s but it was an open diff. so i returned it today and got the correct one. Man it is different than the first one. the first one that i picked up was from a 2wd.
So the one that i picked up today actually has 3.73 gears. I wanted these initially but they didnt have one. ithey shipped it from socal. Anyway it is from a 2000 exploder with 41k on it. I cant wait. this one came complete. even has the e-brake cable.

So i unloaded the rear end from my pick up.

I did some measuring and noticed that the drivers side is 3" longer than the passenger side. I am wondering though if i am measureing correctly. I measured from the housing. Should i measure from the pinion shaft? that way i am measureing from the true center?

Anyways, i started cutting off all the existing bracketry and crap like that. I should have it all smoothed out today and ready to cut. I have been reading all over the web that you can really cut it with just about anything. including a sawz all. But i was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to which tool will give me the straightes cut.
I have a portable band saw that may work but holding it straight will be tough.

I will post some pics tonight.
